The tournament this year was held a week later than usual due to commitments elsewhere by the organisers, Mary Wikner and Sue Hanton.  As it happened this was a good thing as the ‘old’ middle Saturday when the Mixed doubles would have been played was extremely wet.  This said we were blessed with wonderful weather for the whole fortnight, bar one evening when there was a short stoppage for a torrential downpour.

The tournament was well supported with high entries in both men’s singles and doubles and an increase in entries for the ladies’ singles and doubles.  All these events were played throughout the two weeks culminating in superb matches on Finals Day.  The mixed doubles was played on the middle Saturday with two very exciting and again high standard semi-final matches. Congratulations to Alex Jones and Mary McDowall who defeated the first seeds, Chris Owen and Jenny Madden, in a close fought game.  The plate event was concluded on the day and was won by John Miles and Nicola Hayes.

Finals Day was again magnificently orchestrated by Paul Holman who puts in so many hours researching the club history and in organising everything for the finals.  This year he produced a great booklet with introductions to the finalists and lists of previous winners.  In addition to all this Paul and his partner, Mark Masters, won the men’s doubles, coming back from one set down against Paul Guppy and Karl Mills to win 7-5 in the third set.  We all owe a huge thank you to Paul both for his admin and for the high standard that he sets in his play and in his conduct both on and off court.

The men’s singles was equally exciting with Mark Masters making his second come back of the day, losing the first set to Stephen Euesden (a rising young star) and using his experience to comes out the winner in a close third set.  Linda Freedman again won the ladies’ singles for a record 7th time but was made to work very hard for her victory by Mary McDowall, a new member who is proving to be a great asset to PBTC.  Linda Freedman and Jenny Madden won the ladies’ doubles but had to struggle against Nikki Hancock and Louise Morrison who won the first set 7-5 and only yielded in the third set by 6-4.  The mixed doubles was played between Alex Jones and Mary McDowall and Simon Eaves-Bunce and Joanne Hewison, another new asset to PBTC.  Simon and Jo overcame Alex and Mary, who couldn’t reach the heights they had the previous weekend.  It is particularly pleasing that Simon has got his name on the honours board as he is moving to Cornwall after 12 years as a member and who has been a 1st team captain and loyal supporter of the mens’ teams.

Several people remarked how high the standard was in all events and how enjoyable it was watching all the matches. The co-operation and willingness to help by all the competitors throughout the fortnight also added to the friendly atmosphere.

Many thanks are due to many people but particularly to John and Elaine Mills – John for his support and help during the two weeks and both of them for their hard work in organising all the food for Finals Day and all Elaine’s lovely cakes.  Karl’s father-in-law, Mick, was again responsible for the delicious barbecue and  Linda Freedman organised the food for the Mixed doubles day. Ian Hamilton worked both before and after the matches putting things up taking them down, ably helped by members too many to mention by name but a big thank you to you all.  I, Mary, would like to personally thank Sue Hanton for her invaluable support this year during a very busy and quite difficult time for me.
